From the 24th to the 30th of January 2016 Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu’s Mahinga Kai Monitoring & Enhancement team and TMK team members conducted a resurvey of the Waitutu pāua population. This survey followed up on baseline surveys undertaken prior to the establishment of Waitutu Mātaitai in 2010. The team focused on the abundance and distributions of important kaimoana with particular emphasis on pāua and the composition of habitats that support this customary fishery. The information gained from the resurvey provides robust information on the abundance, size and distribution of pāua in this area and allows insight into the population dynamics within this region following the introduction of the Mātaitai. A special thank you to caretakers of the Waitutu Lodge Rose and Pete for their hospitality during this mahi.
