Rōpu Mahinga Kai

The Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai Forum is the governing body of the project. A Rōpu Mahinga Kai oversees week to week activities, performs the governance roles and functions set out by the Forum and puts national research and management priorities into action for the collective membership.

Background

At the Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai inaugural national hui on 26 and 27 July at Katī Huirapa Ki Puketeraki marae, delegates agreed it was too early to decide on important governance and research issues, but nominated an interim Rōpu to start the process by researching options to bring back to the national hui at Ōnuku marae on 12 and 13 November. Their recommendations were accepted by the Ōnuku Forum and the Interim Rōpu were collectively re-elected, except that Owen Woods (Kaikoura Rūnanga asked to be replaced by Sharon Hillier).

The general guidance to the Rōpu is that Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai not override local research and management priorities, but find opportunities to coordinate kaitiaki nationally, learn lessons from each other, and set some national priorities.

Roles of Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai and its Rōpu in making submissions

The Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai decided at Ōnuku Forum gathering that no submission should go in on specific policy issues or consultation requests by external agencies in the name of Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai. This should be avoided to ensure that local rangitiratanga is never undermined and that government agencies consult the manawhenua/mana moana about each specific issue.  On the other hand the Forum urged the Rōpu, TMK Advisory group and project researchers to make available via this website as much information as they could to allow individual iwi members to decide on the issues and help prepare submissions in their own names.

Here are a few examples of earlier submissions for Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai website members to download:

Posting of new resource material on the site will be announced in Whiriwhiri Whakaaro as issues arise.

Marine Protected Areas Proposals: Do you want to make a submission from your local group?

During it's 22 August meeting, the interim Rōpu raised concern about the Marine Protected Areas implementation plan and it's potential impact on customary fishing regulations. To read more about the issue, and help decide what, if anything, your iwi/hapū/rūnanga might say to DoC and Ministry of Fisheries, please visit the Action page below:
