We very much hope that you will be able to attend the next gathering of Te Tiaki Mahinga Kai at Ōnuku. You interim Rōpu Mahinga Kai have been hard at work to help set the foundations of a long-term (20+ year) project. The main goals for the hui include:

  1. Establish governance procedures, roles and responsibilities
  2. Elect permanent Rōpu Mahinga Kai; choose Kaumātua and Technical Advisory Group
  3. Identify national research and management priorities for Mahinga Kai

We will also begin a series of wānanga at the hui, this time on pāua and kina management and on the Mātaitai, Taiāpure and temporary closure area management tools.

The flaxroots are to be in charge of the project so we hope you can come to Ōnuku to steer the project in the right direction and set up systems that keep the tangata tiaki/kaitiaki in the driver’s seat. Convince your whānau members with particular experience and interest in mahinga kai to come with you! Please share these materials with anyone you think will be interested in the project.

Draft Programme

Registration and Feedback Form. Please fill out the attached form, or contact TMK.

Draft governance structure and relationship protocols for discussion.

If you are coming to the Ōnuku Hui representing your iwi, hapū, mātaitai, taiāpure, or temporary closure management group, please read and share the draft governance structure and draft project protocol with them and ask for authorization to sign on their behalf at the hui if you are in general agreement. Also come with your concerns and suggested revisions - the kōrero at the hui may lead to modifications to the protocol, in which case we will edit and printout the modified version for signing at the hui.

This short PowerPoint presentation should answer most questions about the project and the proposed governance structure, but please contact us at any time if you wish to talk further.

Map, accommodation and travel logistics.

Flights:  Please contact Patsy Perenara-O'Connell (0800 KAI TAHU) or Mark Haggerty (03 479 9241) for help with airline bookings. If you are making your own reservations, please try to arrive in Christchurch before 8:15 am on 12 November and depart no sooner than 5:30pm on the 13th so we can help with ground transportation.

Ground Transportation:  We have arranged transportation leaving the airport at 8:15 am to arrive at Ōnuku in time for the powhiri. Please let us know if you want to travel with us so we know to look for you! From Ōnuku on the 13th, a van will arrive at the airport by 5:00 pm.

Accommodation:
  • Sunday (11 Nov): If you arrive in Christchurch on the 11th, we can help you make accommodations. Contact Mark Haggerty directly on (03) 479-9241.
  • Monday and Tuesday (12 and 13 Nov). We will stay at Ōnuku Marae. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN BEDDING - only a mattress and pillow will be provided. If you require alternative arrangements, please contact Mark Haggerty.

Food:  During the hui, all meals will be at Ōnuku. For meals before and after the hui, please keep receipts if you will be reimbursed for your travel costs. If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know beforehand so we can make arrangements.

Funding: Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu will fund the travel of the Ngāi Tahu delegates. Please contact Patsy Perenara-O'Connell (0800 KAI TAHU) to make your travel arrangements.

There are limited funds available from the University of Otago’s FRST contract to fund leaders from other iwi. Unfortunately we will need to restrict this support to those who came and contributed to the first hui at Karitāne (we so wish it could be otherwise but so far our attempts to raise new funds have failed).

New iwi participants are very welcome!
The research team and Ngāi Tahu will cover your costs once you arrive in Ōnuku, but we cannot pay for travel at this time. Please let us know if you are coming (send in the registration form or give us a call), and we’ll arrange airport transfers or transport out to Ōnuku. We cannot pay for accommodation, but you are welcome to stay at the marae on Tuesday night. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BEDDING.

Once the project is up and running, an urgent priority will be to secure a putea to meet the travel expenses of all the Tangata Whenua members who wish to contribute.

Kai Kōrero and Whiriwhiri Whakaaro

The interim Rōpu Mahinga Kai and research team have worked hard since the Karitāne hui to develop the project website, an email discussion group for kaitiaki (Whiriwhiri Whakaaro), write a project magazine (Kai Kōrero) and to build our research capacity. We will introduce these at the hui and get you signed up if you wish to participate.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact our two main hui organizers:

Mark Haggerty: 03 4794013 mark.haggerty@otago.ac.nz
Greig Hinds: 03 479 5230 greig.hinds@otago.ac.nz
