We are pleased to announce that a member of the TMK team, Emma Kearney has been awarded funding in the 2016 Te Pūnaha Hihiko – Vision Mātauranga Capability Fund investment round. Supported by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Mahinga Kai unit and research/academic staff from the University of Otago, Emma’s project will use mātauranga and modern scientific tools to develop assessment methods to better assess population sizes and catch rates within Customary Protection Areas (CPAs) in Canterbury, Otago and Southland. This research will focus on the better management of finfish and has the potential to address the decline of key customary species in coastal fisheries.
